Insurance coverage becomes effective in just five days' time for accident coverage, which is much faster than companies with 14-day waiting periods. Since its founding in 2018, Prudent Pet has earned a 4.8/5 star rating from over a thousand satisfied online reviews — which makes it a strong contender on the list of best pet insurance companies.
Pros
- No lifetime or per-incident coverage limits
- Optional unlimited annual coverage
- 5-day waiting period for accidents
- Claims do not expire while policy is active
- 24/7 live chat with veterinarians
- Covers curable conditions after 365 days
- No maximum age limit for enrollment
- 30-day money-back guarantee
Cons
- Cannot pay the vet directly
- Requires an annual health check, annual dental exam, and the use of prescribed prophylactic medication

Prudent Pet Insurance plans are customizable, so you only have to pay for the level of coverage you think your pet may need. Plans were created with pet parents in mind, offering comprehensive coverage to help reduce the financial strain of vet bills that many families experience.

Routine Care Add-On
Owners looking for ways to make routine pet care more affordable can enroll in an optional wellness plan. For an additional monthly fee, you can get reimbursed for certain preventive veterinary services — such as vaccinations, fecal exams, and microchipping — up to the policy's specified amount. Prudent Pet also offers a policy rider that can cover veterinary exam fees, which can reduce the amount you have to pay out-of-pocket.
Pawlicy Advisor Tip: We recommend adding routine care for pets under age two due to the high number of wellness visits at this age. Older pets may not save money with a routine care add-on. Learn more: Are Wellness Plans Worth It ?
Waiting Periods
All pet insurance companies require you to wait a predetermined amount of time before your policy coverage takes effect. Waiting periods vary by insurance carrier, and some set different time frames depending on the type of vet visit. For example, Prudent Pet coverage starts after a 5-day waiting period for accidents, 14 days for illnesses, has a straightforward, 14-day waiting period for all services, which is faster than many other companies. Wellness coverage is effective immediately.
- Accidental injuries: 5 days
- Unexpected illnesses: 14 days
- Cruciate ligament issues: 180 days
- Orthopedic conditions: 6 months
- Wellness coverage: 0 days
